Biomimicry

This BV2 model from the USC Range got a little make over on the bottom !

Read on to learn how this art  could be more important than you think ..

Adding art to your Surfboard is cool, it makes your board feel individual and is an important part in a custom surfboard order process.

Well what about if adding certain colours and shapes could also act as a shark deterrent ?

And they was some solid science behind it ?

A recent number of shark encounters of late , which started in West Australia and now the East Coast is seeing large sharks being spotted daily at popular surf breaks especially on the North Coast of NSW.

The Art design is based of Biomimicry which is the science of replicating nature.

A great example of Biomimicry in nature is the humble pilot fish you often see swimming around the head of large predator sharks like Great Whites, the small fish have black and white stripes and subsequently they are not preyed on by the shark .

The colouring of the fish acts like camouflage , preventing the shark from identifying the fish as prey ..

A guy named Hamish Jolly has been doing some solid research on shark's vision and the way there identify food .

CLOSE UP

HA HA ... You couldn't help yourself !

Freight Facts

Some facts about freighting /shipping surfboards from Australia .

Surfboards are long awkward and fragile items. Australia is unfortunately along  way away from the rest of the world and freight companies charge accordingly .
International freight companies charge on the cubic size which is the length by the width by height then work out the price .
Not the actually dead weight which is usually very light , bummer !
Some people use Sea Freight it is cheap but super slow and the chances of damage are high .
We use air freight , most destinations take under a week , delivered to your doorstep.
The prices we quote to our customers are the actually cost that we pay the freight company to ship your surfboard.
We also have to wrap the boards in bubble wrap then box in a custom made surfboard carton .Taking extra care with nose and tails. And often triple wrapping the board in high quality double side bubble wrap.
Even covering the carton with “fragile” stickers won’t protect your board if it is not packaged properly for shipping. That’s why you want your board to be packaged “bullet-proof” and survive the journey and arrive intact.

Check out our shipping page and remember we have many cost effective options, when sending freight  contact us for more information on how to get a custom made Formula Energy Surfboard under your feet sooner than later.

Alien Shooter

USC Alien Step up 6'6 by 19 3/4 by 2 9/16th ( 34 litres ), custom for Tony ,heading for the "Coal Coast" in Southern NSW.

The purple colour on the deck on this Alien Step Up surfboard is actually an organic hemp material thats combined with recycled plastic bottles . The plastics have been broken down into small pellets , it goes by the name Hemp/ PET material .

Its a great alternate way to make a surfboard more durable, especially for heavy footed surfers who tend to crush / damage there decks, but it still retains those performance aspects of a modern surfboard.

Hemp is way more environmentally friendly than our traditional cotton .
For example you require about half the amount of water to produce hemp as you would if producing cotton. Hemp is a strong and reliable plant that grows very quickly. Not only that, hemp produces about 200% – 250% more fibre in the same amount of land compared to cotton.

Read more about the way we apply the hemp deck to the Formula Energy range of surfboards, here
